Wits Department of Paediatric Surgery & Child Health
Where research meets active Paediatric Surgical Care
The Wits Paediatric surgery unit is a dynamic department that has at its core sound principles directed at providing excellence in clinical care, utilising the premise that training and research should directly benefit the community it serves.
Paediatric surgical care is provided to patients referred from within Johannesburg, Gauteng, and the surrounding provinces and countries and includes the management of acute surgical conditions as well as that of more complex specialised childhood surgical conditions. We truly believe in a multi-disciplinary approach to our patients, with involvement of allied health professionals and other specialists and sub-specialists in order to provide the best care possible.
Why the involvement?
The department prides itself on being at the cutting edge of technology and research, having published numerous peer review publications each year. These articles are based upon data and research captured through the Wits academic sphere of influence.
The department currently runs units at two government hospitals, these being:
- Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital (CHBAH)
- Charlote Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH)
The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital is currently under construcition and plans to open its doors in July 2016.
