This is an ever expanding and evolving surgical unit.
The scope and need for care is immense and we have permanent rotations for Registrars and Consultants working through Paediatric Sub-Specialities:

  • General Paediatric Surgery
  • Neonatal Surgery
  • Oncology
  • Urology
  • Burns

This ward is open to all infants and children aged between birth and 16 years of age.

The Paediatric Reality

This is a 365 day a year, 24 hour a day department. Essentially divided into 3 separate units, namely Burns, Neonates and General Paediatric Surgery, The Chris Hani Baragwanath Paediatric Surgery Department will on average:

  • Admit 140 children per month
  • Perform 200 surgeries per month
  • Consult 800 child and infant outpatients per month

24 hour emergency service

In addition to core elective work, the service deals with numerous emergencies, including:

  • Burns (approx 200 – 300 per anum)
  • Congenital and acquired Neonatal emergencies
  • Trauma
  • General Paediatric Surgical emergencies

Neonatal Surgery

There is a dedicated Neonatal ward, consisting of six high-care beds, as well as a newly donated Neonatal Surgical ICU. This unit works in conjunction with the formal Neonatal ICU, and has access to a dedicated theatre with 3 elective lists per week, and 24 hour a day emergency access.


6 ICU beds in conjunction Paediatrics ICU. 24 ward beds. 2 dedicated lists per week and access to dedicated theatre.

General Paediatrics

3 elective lists in state of the art endoscopic theatre. 10 bedded admission ward, 24 bed general ward, and access 8 bedded PICU, run by Paediatric Intensivists.
