The unit performs 80 to 100 operations per month.
In addition to General Paediatric and Neonatal Surgery the department has specific interests in:
- Paediatric Urology, including Renal Transplantation
- Paediatric Trauma
- Haematology and Oncology
The paediatric reality
The ward provides beds for the following surgical disciplines:
- Paediatric/General Surgery
- Trauma cases
- Maxillofacial Surgery
Patients are admitted under the care of these disciplines in an age range of birth to sixteen years. An ambulatory (day case) service is also managed by this ward’s staff.
This is a 24hr, 365 day a year service and you will handle on average:
- 100-150 Paediatric admissions per month
- 100 procedures per month
- 200 outpatients per month
24 hour emergency service
This service covers all Paediatric emergencies, casualty and trauma cases from 0 years to 16 years, and also:
- Paediatric Urology
- Paediatric Thoracic Surgery
- Paediatric Neurosurgery
- Paediatric Oncology
Eight bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
The Johannesburg Academic Hospital also boasts an 8 bed combined Neonatal and Paediatric ICU. This ICU serves all Paediatric cases and Neonatal cases.
This academic unit will offer a host of exposure but more importantly provide valuable support to the community in which it is needed most.
